Most renovations involve electrical work, whether it is new sockets and lighting in a kitchen, an extractor and heated towel rail in a bathroom, or a full rewire of an older property. Our electricians plan the wiring with the rest of the job so cables are run before walls are plastered and floors are laid.
All electrical work is carried out to the current wiring regulations, BS 7671, and tested on completion. You receive the appropriate electrical certificate for the work done.
What is included
- Full and partial rewires
- Consumer unit replacement
- New sockets, switches and circuits
- Kitchen circuits for ovens, hobs and appliances
- Bathroom lighting, extractor fans and towel rails
- Indoor and outdoor lighting
- Smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms
- Electrical Installation Condition Reports
Since February 2022, every home in Scotland must have interlinked smoke and heat alarms, plus a carbon monoxide detector where there is a fuel burning appliance or a flue. We can check what your home has and install a system that meets the standard.
How the work runs
- Survey. We look at the existing installation and agree what new circuits, sockets and lighting you need.
- Quote. You receive an itemised quote, with the electrical work scheduled into the wider programme.
- First fix. Cables and back boxes go in before plastering and flooring.
- Second fix, test and certify. Accessories and fittings are connected, the installation is tested and you receive your certificate.
Rewiring older Edinburgh homes
Older tenement flats and period houses may still have dated wiring, old fuse boxes or too few sockets for modern living. A rewire is best done as part of a wider renovation, when floors are up and walls are being replastered anyway. We lift and relay floorboards carefully, chase walls neatly, and work with our plasterers to make good afterwards.
Electrician FAQs
How do I know if my home needs rewiring?
Signs include an old fuse box, rubber or fabric covered cables, sockets that feel warm and frequent tripping. An Electrical Installation Condition Report tells you the condition of your wiring and what needs attention.
How long does a full rewire take?
A rewire of a typical flat or house takes from several days to a couple of weeks, depending on the size of the property and whether it is occupied. We plan the work to keep disruption down.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. On completion you receive the appropriate certificate confirming the work has been tested.
