Many Edinburgh homes lose heat through roofs, floors and solid walls. Adding insulation during a renovation, while floors are up and walls are being replastered, is the simplest and most cost effective time to do it.
We recommend insulation that suits how your building was built, paying close attention to ventilation and moisture so older properties stay healthy.
What is included
- Loft insulation
- Coombed ceiling insulation
- Insulation under suspended timber floors
- Internal wall insulation
- Insulated plasterboard
- Draught proofing around doors, floors and windows
- Pipe and tank lagging
- Ventilation checks
Solid stone walls need to manage moisture. Some modern insulation products can trap water in traditional walls, so we choose breathable systems for older buildings and keep ventilation in mind throughout.
How the work runs
- Survey. We look at where your home is losing heat and how the walls, roof and floors are built.
- Recommend. We suggest the insulation that suits the building and explain the costs and benefits.
- Install. Insulation is fitted with ventilation paths kept clear and cold bridges avoided.
- Make good. Floors are relaid, walls plastered and the area left ready for decoration.
Insulating traditional Edinburgh properties
Top floor tenement flats often have coombed ceilings that follow the roof slope, while ground floor flats can lose heat through draughty timber floors above a void. Both can be improved, but the details matter. We keep ventilation paths open, avoid creating cold spots that lead to condensation, and use materials suited to traditional construction.
Insulation FAQs
Is it worth insulating an older flat?
Usually, yes. Insulating floors and ceilings and draught proofing windows can make a noticeable difference to comfort and heating bills.
Can solid stone walls be insulated?
They can, using breathable internal wall insulation. It reduces room size slightly and needs careful detailing around windows and floors, which we plan before work starts.
Will insulation cause condensation?
Not when it is designed and fitted correctly. We look at ventilation and moisture as part of the survey.
